There is much that could be said about the handmade Zulu AIDS Baby Bead Badges but the message below says it all. Grant, one of our Endwebu volunteers, works with the AIDS Mothers who make the Baby Bead Badges, overheard a conversation between the mothers.
The women were talking and one of them said to the other as she finished the badges that '... at least she could feed her baby this month.'
Here in the epicenter of the AIDS Pandemic our second group is comprised of Gogos, (Zulu for Grandmothers). The death rate is so high in KwaZulu-Natal that 1 out of 20 people is an AIDS orphan. In places like rural Nhlangwini, Gogos are the only people left to care for many of the 440,000 AIDS orphans in KZN's 9 million person population. Our group of Gogos in Nhlangwini, located in western KwaZulu-Natal, create the AIDS Baby Bead Badges in a special sacred room used for ceremonies and prayers, overlooking the Sacred Mountain of Endwebu.
